Autumn Term 2020

Head Teacher Message
Welcome back to our new Autumn term. On behalf of the staff we would like to welcome you to a new school year and hope that 2020/2021 is a good one for our whole school community and we can finally get back to some form of normality.
I cannot thankyou enough for the tremendous home-schooling efforts you went to during the nations Covid19 lockdown. You all deserve a medal!
I hope that you have all had the chance to relax and recharge your batteries during the summer holidays. It is so important that our children now attend regularly to catch up the ‘missing months’. I’m positive with your continued support and our excellent teaching, our children will continue to achieve well and try their very best in all lessons.
We will one day look back on this period in time with immense pride of how well the children of Beech Grove did. I am so proud of them all and the way they have started back this Autumn term.
As always, our teachers have lots of interesting activities planned for this term and hope that you will enjoy hearing what children have been working on at consultation meetings, and will support them with their homework and reading outside of school. Reading is the key to everything! Please, please, please encourage them as much as you can with their reading at home. It’s greatly appreciated.

Our work for this term

English
This term in AS1, we are concentrating on just being back at school. Routines and structure is being re established and supporting the children with being back in the classroom.
Phonics is the main emphasis in English, continuing on the Read, Write, Inc programme. Not only will the children have specific lessons, but we will also find as many opportunities to reinforce the learning of Phonics during the day. We will be learning to write labels and captions and the basics of sentence writing. Children will have weekly spellings.

Maths
In Maths, we will be concentrating on place value, addition and subtraction. We will be counting forwards and backwards and learning number words. We will be using many practical activities to help children understand number concepts.

Topic
Our topic this half term is Superheroes. We will be finding out about our senses in practical investigations. We will also be looking at local geography and Middlesbrough in particular.
Children will be given opportunities to explore through art activities, mixing colours, looking closely at objects and using a variety of media to express themselves.
After half term our topic is Splendid Skies, when we will be finding out about weather patterns and the changing seasons.

Keeping Safe and Healthy (This section will tell you what we are teaching children about lifestyle choices)
PSHE will have a strong focus as we support the children through this challenging time and we will give opportunities to explore and discuss our feelings.
