Autumn Term 2019

Head Teacher Message
Welcome back to our new Autumn term. On behalf of the staff we would like to welcome you to a new school year and hope that 2019/20 is a good one for our whole school community.
I hope that you have all had the chance to read our really positive Ofsted report from June of last summer. One thing that stood out is how well our children achieve, conduct themselves and really try their very best in all lessons. Something which I’m sure you are just as proud of them as I was and indeed am!!!
Our teachers have lots of interesting activities planned for this term and hope that you will enjoy hearing what children have been working on at consultation meetings, and will support them with their homework and reading outside of school.

Our work for this term

English
SPEAKING AND LISTENING – For our youngest children we will encourage conversation skills and build up the children’s vocabulary through our variety of play based activities. We will develop good listening skills with a range of listening games.
Our older children will be developing a wider range of vocabulary, including use of adjectives and extending sentences that are grammatically correct.
READING – The very first step when learning to read is to develop a love of books. So we share super stories.
Older children will be learning to read through the Read Write, Inc phonics scheme. There will be one to one reading and books will be going home at an appropriate level.
WRITING – Early writing begins with MARK MAKING. The children need to learn how to hold a pencil properly and to make a variety of pre-writing marks – lines and circles, zig-zags and curves.
Older children will be learning how to write in sentences, spelling using the phonics that have been learned in Read, Write Inc. They will be learning how to write instructions.
The oldest children will be writing character descriptions using similes and WOW adjectives. There will be an  assessed piece of writing every two weeks. They will be writing fiction as well as non fiction.

Maths
Our younger children are practising our counting skills as part of our everyday routines. We will be learning to find one more and one less and to match numbers to counted objects
This term we will also be learning about SHAPES. We will be learning about CIRCLES SQUARES AND TRIANGLES and play matching and sorting games as well as going on a SHAPE HUNT around the school.
Key stage 1 and key stage 2 children will be developing their understanding of place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division.

Topic
Our topic for Autumn 1 is ‘Why do you love me so much?’ – We will be talking about our families and our homes. We will talk about our friends and find out about similarities and differences between ourselves and others. We will be finding out about how to look after our body and how to have a healthy lifestyle. Key stage 2’s topics are Mighty Metal, where we will be finding out about materials and local history and geography. We will be reading the story of The Iron Man, by Ted Hughes.
Our topic for Autumn 2 is ‘Why do I sleep at night?’ – We will be looking at the difference between day and night, finding out about nocturnal animals, and also exploring different types of weather.
Key Stage 2’s topic is Predator. We will be finding out about animals and food chains.
There will also be some seasonal min topics, such as Bonfire Night, Diwali and Remembrance Day.

Keeping Safe and Healthy (This section will tell you what we are teaching children about lifestyle choices)
The children will be learning about rules and routines in the classroom and the playground. We will focus on our FIVE GOLDEN RULES and ensure children understand what each rule means. We will talk about why we have rules to keep everybody safe and happy. We will also show children the correct way to use our climbing equipment in the outdoor area.
