Summer Term 2019
Head Teacher Message
Where did the spring term go? The time has flown since children started their new classes in September.
On behalf of the staff I would like to wish everyone a happy return after the Easter break. Let us hope that the sun keeps its hat on and that term is a good one for our whole school community.
This term we hope to continue with our children achieving great progress within their core subject areas, due to their tremendous hard working attitude and the dedicated staff team here at school.
Children’s classroom and corridor manners continue to be amazing which creates such a lovely, warm and caring atmosphere around school. I am immensely proud of all of the children. In fact I think I might just pop, as I am bursting with pride!
We hope to make full use of our Secret Garden in lesson times and maybe plant some wonderful flowers for us all to enjoy (even the ducks!!!). It is wonderful to see our children participating in their outdoor learning. They get so excited and engaged.
Our teachers have lots of interesting activities planned for this term and hope that you will enjoy hearing what children have been working on at consultation meetings, and will support them with their homework and reading outside of school. (remember x3 a week reading at home is our minimum expectation)
We also hope that every effort is made by you for every child to attend school regularly. It is so important for your child’s development that we can’t stress that enough. (96% and above is GOOD attendance)
On a final note I would personally like to thank you all for the tremendous support you have given me this year as Headteacher. It has meant a great deal.
Here’s to a really positive summer term!
Our work for this term
We will continue to work in our Read, Write Inc groups each morning. During the first half of the term our topic reading and writing will be based upon ‘The Greedy Bee. During the second half of the term we will be learning all about Non – Fiction texts. We will be using contents and index pages to help us research lots of facts for our Beach Combers topic. Then we shall use all this great research to help us write reports. Our spellings this term will be taken from the year 2 National curriculum common exception and rules list (Please see your child’s class teacher if you would like a copy of this.)
During the first half term we will consolidate our addition and subtraction of two 2-digit numbers using written methods. This will be followed by work on recalling and using multiplication and division facts, including work on fractions. Please keep practising the X2, X5 and X10 tables at home as this will really help your child J The second half term will see us revisiting time and 2D/3D shape. This will be followed with more work on measures and finally problem solving involving number sequences.
Our topic for the first half term is called The Scented Garden. During this topic we will become plant experts. We will be growing a variety of plants from seeds and bulbs. We will spend lots of time in our school grounds learning about plants in their habitats. We also plan to visit Albert Park to help us with our topic.
We are hoping to have our annual visit to Daisy Chain.
Our topic for the second half term will be Beachcombers, which will involve us spending time researching and learning all about the creatures that you can find at the seaside. We will be using secondary sources such as books and the internet to help us learn lots of interesting facts and we will even create and make our own imaginary seaside creatures.
Keeping Safe and Healthy (This section will tell you what we are teaching children about lifestyle choices)
We will teach children about the importance of staying safe in the sun. We will also be discussing how to keep safe at the seaside and what to do in an emergency.
